The Roger L. and Ann M. Schmidt Scholarship was started with a donation from Logan and Carol Hardison, long-time friends of Roger and Ann. Roger Lee Schmidt graduated from San Bernardino High, San Bernardino Valley College, the University of Redlands, and Claremont Graduate School earning degrees in philosophy, religion, and history. He taught at SBVC and Crafton Hills College from 1963-1993 serving as department chairs at both schools. He was the author or co-author of six books, including college texts on religion and books exploring the history of SBVC. He founded the first religious studies program at a California public community college. After retiring from SBVC, he served as Dean of Academic Affairs and President of the University of the West.
Ann Mattison Schmidt graduated from Colton High School and from San Bernardino Valley College where she was President of the Associated Women Students. She received her B.A. in English from the University of California, Riverside. Primarily a homemaker, Ann worked for a time as a social worker for the County Welfare Department. Later she worked in adult education tutoring English as a Second Language, and, for several years, worked in a bookstore where she dealt with women’s literature.
