CHC - Betty Jo Wood Memorial Scholarship

Betty Jo Wood joined the staff of Crafton Hills College in 2006 and worked determinedly to provide a welcoming environment and the best possible support for students. After her retirement in 2012, Betty Jo maintained a seat as a Director on the CHC Foundation Board and was an active member of the President’s Circle. Upon her passing in January 2019, her family established the Betty Jo Wood Memorial Scholarship to encourage students who are just starting — or starting over in their lives. Betty Jo supported Crafton because she was a “firm believer in paying it forward”, she said that it was “her pleasure to give back to help those who have not been so blessed and to be a blessing to them”. In the process of establishing this scholarship, her daughter shared this story, “When I was in 2nd grade, I came home from school and told my Mom that I had signed her up as the room mom.” Betty Jo asked, “What does a room mom do?”, and her daughter replied, “I’m not sure, but whatever it is you will say yes and be good at it”. That is just how Betty Jo lived her life. When a student commits to college and they need a scholarship to help make their dream come true, Betty Jo would have said yes and helped them make it happen. Criteria: Students should be continuing at Crafton or transferring to a 4-year university, have maintained a 3.0 or higher GPA and preference is given to students who have overcome significant obstacles to completing their education. Involvement with clubs and organizations on campus and service to the community desired.
