SBVC - Aram M. Sogomonian Memorial

Aram M. Sogomonian, affectionately regarded as a modern renaissance man was a dedicated lifelong learner and lifetime teacher. In addition to home maintenance, auto repairs, and garden projects he enjoyed sharing his academic knowledge and expertise with students. Students enjoyed learning from his lively lectures and ability to make political science and law relevant for them. Aram had an impact in people’s lives as evidenced by the clever anecdotes former students have shared about his contribution to their education. Professor Sogomonian imparted thoughtful, meaningful lessons in multiple disciplines including Political Science and Law. His lifetime teaching credential allowed him to serve as a Spanish faculty when needed. As a polyglot Aram spoke English, Armenian, Spanish, and Japanese. Though passionate about languages, his years at San Bernardino Valley College were spent transmitting the spirit of our founding fathers, the framework of the law, constitutional law, and Political Science. Furthermore, Aram provided insightful post-election political commentary on KVCR, he volunteered at local legal aid clinics providing services and was selected to serve as judge Pro Tem in the San Bernardino courthouse. Through his teachings Aram aimed to demonstrate the importance of the law and political science in students’ lives. He wanted to educate students, so they were informed, critical thinkers amidst any political and legal issues of the times. The recipient must be a bilingual transfer student majoring in political science or law with a 3.0 or better grade point average. The donor and the SBVC Scholarship Committee select the recipient.
