CHC - Betty Byron Memorial Scholarship - Fine Arts

Betty Byron Memorial Scholarship – Fine Arts – “Betty was always an active member of our campus community and her spirit and vitality will be deeply missed,” said former Crafton Hills College President Gloria Macías Harrison. A librarian at CHC for 29 years, she was appointed head librarian in 1986; her great love was to help people succeed. She initiated the College Begins in Kindergarten program in 1993 and the Annual Baroque Festival in 1996. She was instrumental in CHC adopting three culturally diverse elementary schools. She initiated a college intern program in which CHC students in the Computer Information Science program created websites for Yucaipa elementary schools. Betty was also an accomplished master potter and was well known for her artistry in ceramics. Among the many honors and accolades she received during her career were CHC’s 1993 Professor of the Year, and she was recognized by the University of Redlands’ Town and Gown for her efforts in bringing art to education. Her husband Ed Yarnelle established the Betty Byron Memorial Scholarship upon her death on February 7, 2005. The Betty Byron Memorial Atrium was named in her honor and is located in the courtyard of the Learning Resource Center building, next to the Tutoring Center.
